How Many CSRS Employees Are Left in the Federal Workforce Today?
With the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) officially closed to new federal employees since 1984, it's a valid question to ask: how many CSRS employees are left in the government today? According to the latest data, only about 44,000 federal employees are still enrolled in CSRS, making up just around 1.6% of the federal workforce. These remaining employees are nearing retirement, and their departure will mark the end of an era in federal retirement planning. While their numbers dwindle, CSRS still plays a large role in retirement benefits, covering over 2.2 million retirees and offering significantly higher average annuity payments than FERS.
